  1. Capital of the Tatar autonomous republic in 
  2. central USSR, on the river Volga; population 
  3. (1987) 1,068,000. It a transport, commercial, 
  4. and industrial centre (engineering, oil 
  5. refining, petrochemicals, textiles, large fur 
  6. trade). Formerly capital of a Tatar khanate, 
  7. Kazan was captured by Ivan IV `the Terrible' 
  8. 1552. The `Black Virgin of Kazan', an icon so 
  9. called because blackened with age, was 
  10. removed to Moscow (1612-1917), where the 
  11. great Kazan Cathedral was built to house it 
  12. 1631; it is now in the USA. Among miracles 
  13. attributed to its presence were the defeat of 
  14. Poland 1612 and of Napoleon at Moscow 1812.
